Swordmaster: winning up close

Why melee matters on Arrakis, how to survive your first fights and how to use the Swordmaster in the Deep Desert.

01

Why the blade still matters

On Arrakis, personal shields stop fast attacks like bullets, but a slow, deliberate blade gets through. That single rule is why the Swordmaster exists: against a shielded enemy, a good melee fighter is often more dangerous than a gunner.

The Swordmaster trainer comes from the Ginaz school and focuses on melee damage, defence and mobility. You pick one starting trainer, but you can learn from others later. Starting as a Swordmaster doesn't lock you in.

02

Your first fights

Early on, fights are decided by stamina and positioning more than by damage. Don't swing at everything. Block, wait for an opening, hit, and step back. Running out of stamina in the middle of a group is the classic Swordmaster death.

Pull enemies one at a time. Use rocks and doorways so you only face one opponent. If a gunner stays at range, close the distance behind cover instead of sprinting across open sand.

Quick tips

  • Upgrade your melee weapon as soon as you can craft a better one.
  • Keep healing on your hotbar, not in your bag.
  • Watch your stamina bar. Never start a fight with it half empty.

03

Building your skills

Put your first points into the parts of the Swordmaster tree that keep you alive and let you move: defence and gap-closing. Raw damage comes later.

Many players pair the Swordmaster with a second trainer. A little ranged support from the Trooper covers enemies you can't reach. Bene Gesserit abilities help control a fight.

Swordmaster in the Deep Desert

In PvP, other players use shields and cover too. Your job in a group is usually to pressure gunners and protect whoever is harvesting. Stay close to your team. A Swordmaster alone on open sand is an easy target.

Quick tips

  • Fight near rocks: cover for you, and no worms.
  • Let the ranged players open the fight, then go in.
  • Retreat early. A lost fight costs less than a lost harvester.
