Base

Your first base: a spot, water and power

How to choose a spot that doesn't get you eaten, which buildings come first and how to stop running out of water.

01

Choosing a spot

Build on rock, never on open sand. Sandworms can't reach you on rock, and you'll spend a lot of time running in and out of your base.

Look for a spot close to the resources you use most, with room to grow and a way in for vehicles. A sheltered cliff or crevice is ideal. It's also easier to defend later.

Quick tips

  • Walk around the spot before you claim it. Check where vehicles can get in.
  • Don't build right next to a busy road or a popular resource node.

02

Claiming land and the first buildings

You claim your plot with a sub-fief console. That console marks where you're allowed to build, so place it thoughtfully in the middle of the spot you want.

Start small: storage, a fabricator for crafting, a windtrap for water and a generator for power. Walls and a roof come next, so your gear is out of the sun and the storms.

03

Water

Water is the resource you'll run out of first. A windtrap slowly collects water from the air. One is rarely enough, so add a second as soon as you can.

Your stillsuit reduces how much water you lose, so keep it upgraded and repaired. Later you can get extra water from blood extraction and a deathstill.

Quick tips

  • Build two windtraps early, not one.
  • Always carry some water when you leave the base.
  • Always short on water? Come to starter night on Tuesday.

04

Power

Machines need power. A fuel generator is the simple start, but it runs dry. If your base suddenly stops working, check the fuel first.

Once you've unlocked it, a wind turbine gives power without refuelling. Until then, keep a stack of fuel in storage next to the generator.
